Love Hate Analysis

In the first key scene at the train station, as hate approaches the male protagonist and they start to converse, over the shoulder shots are used. This connotes interest, they are interested in one another in terms of trying to figure the other out. We are introduced to ‘hate’ through the mise-en-scene of costume, props and colour, she wears all black thus connoting she is dark and twisted. Black also connotes authority and power foreshadowing the disastrous effect and how persuasive she is at getting the male protagonist to do things he wouldn't do. the mise-en-scene of the umbrella prop even though it appears to not be raining suggests ‘hate’ is  trying to shield herself from the sun and anything good connoting she loves all things unpleasant. Furthermore the male protagonist wears an orange shirt in a grey tracksuit. Orange connotes warmth and energy symbolising the male protagonist overly-nice attitude however grey connotes bleakness and dullness suggesting his nice attitude has just made his life boring and dull rather than been an advantage to him getting on with life better.  The editing is slow in this scene connoting the male protagonist's mind-set, he takes his time with everything and is slow to make any connection between hate and himself. Moreover before ‘hate’ approaches the male protagonist, there is a voiceover of him explaining his Ex, the fact he abruptly stops his voiceover as ‘ hate ‘ comes over which connotes she doesn't want him to think about ‘irrelevant’ people and continue to dwell on the past.

Another key scene is when ‘hate’ first enters his house. Throughout there is high key lighting suggesting his house is very personal for him and brings him  joy spending time in his house. There is a tracking shot of ‘ hate’ touching the antiques on the wall, her nonchalant touching of them suggests she doesn't see the point to the them and sees them as clutter connoting for the male protagonist they hold sentimental value, for him it’s a way of holding on to memories he refuses to forget connoting his problem is he doesn't like change. Furthermore as ‘hate’ picks up the photo of ‘joy’ jump cuts are used which connote annoyance, the male protagonist is annoyed at her lack of respect for his personal things and feels uncomfortable with her walking around like she owns the place.  There is also a wide shot used which shows the room, the mise-en-scene of props makes the room look cluttered. As ‘hate’ leaves there is a worm eye view through the peephole where her head looks big this may connote her cocky and arrogant attitude which is why she sends him a kiss even though he clearly threw her out with some animosity towards her. As the male protagonist asks ‘hate' to leave a non-diagetic soundtrack starts. The soundtrack sounds slightly upbeat which is ironic considering it’s not really a happy moment.

A final key scene is the party scene, as both hate and the male protagonist approach the doorsteps there is a high angle as they look like at the hostess with disgust which may connote the hostess feels as though she’s better than them but they believe in fact she’s inferior to them. In the party there is red lighting, the colour red connotes intensity, passion and anger.A whirlwind of emotions connotes intoxication suggesting they all just want to get drunk and let go.  Anger is also  evident  from Ben’s voice over as he insults his friends. The mise-en-scene of the different fancy dress costumes connotes a facade. Ben and hate didn't dress up because they didn't want to be perceived as something their not both figuratively and literally whereas his friends are more than willing to be a different character for the day yet the beginning of the film suggests they have a lot self insurance, this indicates that his friends are not true themselves or each other about how they may feel hence as they are wearing a facade just in order to keep up relationships.
