Audience Reserach

My Survey :

Dear Megan...

The short film industry’s audience is quite specific compared that of the mainstream audience of larger full length films. There are two main groups of people who will be familiar with short films; unemployed students seeking a future in the film industry and people who are already successful in the industry. Industry professionals and investors may be looking at the short films to find potential in a director, producer or writer to work for them for the particular company.  Enemployed students would be viewing the films for inspiration for their own work as an amateur film maker. Most of these short films would be viewed online so the audience would be familiar with the use of internet therefore protruding short films have a 'niche' audience.

Audience Profile

The BBFC's Guidelines state that strong language (e.g. 'f***') may be passed at 12 or 12A, depending on the manner in which it is used, who is using the language, its frequency and any special contextual justification. Sex may be briefly and discreetly portrayed at 12A or 12. Verbal sex references should not go beyond what is suitable for young teenagers. At 12A, moderate violence is allowed but it should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if they can be justified by their context (for example brief sight of bloody injury in a medical drama).

Based on the BBFC’s guidelines I have decided my audience need to be age 12 or over because there is brief display of self-implicated violence however there is no spillage of blood. Also my topic is about love and companionship between two people which indirectly includes the topic of sexual relations however i do not explicitly touch on the topic of sex.

I wanted my Target audience profile to be 13 because he/she will be at the secondary school stage. Based on personal experiences I know secondary school is a time of personal discovery and with that comes challenges and pressure to conform to society’s version of cool or pretty. Also girls would be going through puberty at this stage if they haven’t already therefore I want my message of learning to love yourself to impact girls at this age otherwise they are likely to grow up insecure of self-worth issues. Also it’s important they realise love is something they really shouldn’t be focusing on until way down the line. It’s not only girls that  are consumed with being deemed cool by society, boys go through this  both genders then succumb to materialistic demands by getting the newest ‘crepes’ so they can get attention from the opposite sex.

Stereotypical it is assumed only females go through insecurity issues and desperation at having someone to love however statistics contradict this stereotype. The rate of suicides in the UK increased in 2013; with the level among males it’s highest since 2001. The male suicide rate has increased significantly since 2007, the ONS said, while female rates have stayed relatively constant and were consistently lower than those for men. In 1981, 63% of UK suicides were male, but in 2013 the figure was 78%. The proportion of male to female deaths by suicide has increased steadily since 1981. No matter what both genders ultimately want someone to love them and vice versa which could spiral down into having depression and suicide when love is not reciprocated.

From the survey i concluded that not alot of people have watched short films before and if they did it was't primarily due to their own interest but due to recoommendation or instruction they watched a short film, which tells me the distribution and exhibition of short films are very limted compared to feature-length films. Also it was evident that the film's plot is something the audience wanted to gradually solve with multiple actors and dialogue in the scene, indiciating audience's of today's generation have moved from a passive audience to an active audience.

Completing my target audience through the help of my survey ensured I prepared specific things in my short film in order for my target audience to feel it was targeted for them for example using colloquial language.

Yours Sincerly, Megan xo
