1. The title is in bold at the top so it’s clear for the reader to see in case they want to go watch it, they wont forget the title.

2.  The tagline’ film of the month’ connotes straightaway to the reader it’s a good film, persuading them to go watch it.

3. The review starts with a snarky/sarcastic tone, which straight away grabs the reader’s attention and doesn’t bore them; it’s a catchy way to start the review. It then goes to reference films that have a similar theme to ‘northern exposure’.

4. The review has multiple screenshots/ snapshots of the film; the one with the gun and three men tells the reader there will be some action in the film. The picture of a car on a frozen lake at the bottom of the page suggest danger to the reader, also telling the reader the film has a sense f a climax and build up in the film it’s not just flat and boring.

5.The Review comments on the director’s ability and whether if her choice of direction was effective or not.

6. The tone of the review is slightly jokey and sarcastic at times, which makes it more interesting for the reader to read.

Magazine Deconstruction

What is missing?

The review does not have a quick verdict section that some magazine reviews seem to have. Additionally it hasn’t mentioned any sort of ratings, this review is full of qualitative data with a very in depth account of the film which is good because it gives everything for the audience to make a valuable decision on whether or not to watch the movie however it may be a bit too long winded for some therefore a quick verdict section would’ve been ideal.

1. The title of the film is written at the top, in a bold font so it grabs the reader’s attention and it’s clear for the readers to see.

2. The review gives the reader an overview of when the film is being released and production information such as whom the director is and cast names.

3. The Synopsis provides the reader with an overview of what the film is about as the review is just an opinion of the film but for readers who have never come across the movie before, a synopsis gives them a valid picture of what to expect.

4.  The review starts by drawing in an already established fan base that would’ve been created via the book the film is based upon, this gives readers an alternative way of getting a review- they can look up reviews about the book or ones that compare it with the film.

7. The review doesn’t just comment on the camerawork and scenes in the film but also comments on the film’s use of sound and mise-en-scene, by touching all four areas it shows the reviewer understands the film as a whole package not just the camerawork.

6. The review throughout continuously makes a comparison to the true story the film is based on and Mann’s adaptation of the story, by doing this the review is able to make light of what should’ve or could’ve been included in the film.

5.An image from the film is aesthetically pleasing and is able to grab the reader’s focus when skipping through the magazine. The use of this screenshot from the film tells the reader there will be some element of action due to the image of a gun; also it looks as if it’s at night connoting sense of mystery.

8. The review ends with a disadvantage of the film showing there are flaws to the film allowing the reader to weigh up the pros and cons and decide whether its worthy enough of watching.
